Skip the Ferry Crowds and DRIVE to This Sun-Splashed Greek Island for Seaside Charm & Epic Beaches

One of just a few Greek Islands you can drive to from the mainland, this Ionian beauty is a favorite destination for beach-loving Greeks.

Lefkada doesn’t get nearly as much attention as its sister islands in the Ionian Sea, Corfu and Kefalonia. But that’s a big part of its appeal.

The island is home to some of the most dramatic coastline in all of Greece, with white cliffs dropping into water so blue it looks fake. And yet it flies under the radar compared to the better-known Greek islands.

Unless, of course, you’re Greek (in which case, Lefkada is no secret!).

My husband, Dave, and I recently spent a couple of days in the seaside town of Nidri, Lefkada as part of our two-week trip around the Ionian Islands.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will undoubtedly blow on more flights (it’s a vicious cycle).  All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.

If I’m being honest, Lefkada was a bit of an afterthought on our itinerary.

We came to the Ionian islands primarily for Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Paxos. But with Lefkada just sitting right there in the middle of the map, it didn’t seem right to skip it.

So, I added a 2-night stopover between Kefalonia and Paxos to our itinerary. And I’m so glad I did!

Even with just one full day to explore, Lefkada made quite an impression. We could easily have filled 4 or 5 days here, maybe more.

But when it comes to the Greek Islands, there’s never enough time is there?

Ultimate Greek Islands Travel Guide

Planning a trip to Greece in 2026?

From the most spectacular beaches to the tastiest treats to try, here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip to the Greek Islands!

Now let’s dive into what makes Lefkada special and what to see and do when you visit.

What makes Lefkada unique among Greek islands?

Three words: Ease of Access.

You don’t need a ferry or a flight to get here from the mainland.

That’s right.

A narrow causeway and floating bridge connect Lefkada to mainland Greece. That means you can drive straight onto the island.

That’s a rare thing in Greece, and it makes Lefkada far more accessible than most.

Of course, I’m not suggesting you make the 4-hour drive from Athens to Lefkada (a quick flight is much easier). But, in theory, you certainly could.

🗺️ How to Get There

✈️ By Air

The closest airport to Lefkada is Aktion Airport (PVK) in Preveza. Located on the mainland, it’s just a short distance from the floating bridge that connects to the island.

Several airlines fly here seasonally from major European cities, and domestic connections from Athens are easy to find.

After an issue finding a direct ferry connection from Kefalonia during our early June visit, Dave and I originally planned to fly from Kefalonia nonstop on Sky Express. It’s a quick, painless hop that takes just 40 minutes.

But we were able to get a last-minute ferry instead (more on that in a moment!).

⛴️ By Ferry

During high season, ferries connect Lefkada to nearby islands, including Kefalonia, Ithaca, and Meganisi. The seaside resort area of Nidri is the main port for many of these connections.

Outside of peak summer months, options thin out considerably — something I learned the hard way on this particular trip. We had hoped to take the Fiskardo-Vasiliki ferry between islands, but unfortunately, it wasn’t running yet on our travel day.

Luckily, while we were on Zakynthos, we were notified by Ferry Hopper that the ferry route we wanted had just begun for the season (I had asked in the app to be notified when it started). We were able to cancel our flight and take the ferry instead.

Thank you, Ferry Hopper!

Tip: The absolute best site for booking ferries in Greece is FerryHopper.com.

Our ferry route challenges continued getting to our next stop on Paxos, but I’ll cover that in more detail in the next post.

🚗 By Car

This is not something I usually cover when writing about the Greek Islands. But as I already mentioned, when you visit Lefkada, you can arrive by car from the Greek mainland.

The Lefkada Bridge (officially called the Agia Mavra floating bridge) is a unique pontoon swing bridge that connects Lefkada to the mainland. It pivots to allow boats to pass through the canal and operates on a timed schedule to manage both marine and vehicle traffic.

When it comes to getting around Lefkada, renting a car is a good idea. Just keep in mind that some of the best beaches require navigating long, winding roads through mountainous regions.

Or, just skip that, base yourself in Nidri, and access all those lovely beaches by water.

🏨 Where to Stay

The best place to stay on Lefkada really depends on what you want to do. Lefkada Town (the main town in the north) is great for access to the old town, restaurants, and the Castle of Santa Maura.

If you’re arriving by ferry in Vasiliki (at the southern end of Lefkada), you’ll find a few good options there, too. It’s a small resort area with lovely beaches and seaside restaurants. And there are a few other great spots along the coast in between, like Mikros Gialos.

But I highly recommend staying in Nidri. Here’s why.

Located on the eastern coast, Nidri (also spelled Nydri) is the island’s most popular and highly developed resort town. It’s the best choice if boat trips are your priority. Just about every full-day boat tour departs from Nidri’s efficient harbor.

With just one full day to explore Lefkada, seeing the island’s beaches and the coastline was our top priority. That’s why we chose to stay in Nidri.

This small, seaside town doesn’t hold the kind of charm that you’ll find in Fiskardo on Kefalonia or Chania on Crete, but it’s a great home base for visitors. With plenty of hotel options, shops, and waterfront restaurants.

And the best part – easy access to every boat tour on the island!

Best Hotels in Lefkada

MVM Concepts Apartment (Nidri) — We chose this modern apartment for our stay, and I’d recommend it to anyone. We booked the two-bedroom apartment mainly because it had a washing machine and was close to the port. The apartment was newly renovated, roomy, and well-equipped.

San Nicolas Resort (Mikros Gialos) — This is the splurge option on Lefkada. Perched with serious sea views over the Ionian Sea, it’s a great choice for couples or anyone looking for the full-service resort experience on the island.

Pomaria Boutique Residences (Lefkada Town) — If you want Lefkada Town at your fingertips, this posh all-suite property is a great choice. With one and two-bedroom options, the suites are spacious and well-appointed. The two-bedroom suites even come with a private pool.

Meltemi Studios (Vasiliki) – In Vasiliki, this is my top pick. It’s also a great choice if you’re on a budget. Studio suites here are modern, sparkling clean, and some have a terrace with sea views over Vasiliki Bay.

Nidri Villa with Private Pool — One of 4 independent villas located in the new Stone and Sea Villas complex, this 2-bedroom home has plenty of space and a lovely private pool.

Wake-up-by-the-sea! – If you’re looking for a traditional Lefkada home by the sea, this 3-bedroom apartment is full of colorful Greek charm. The location is ideal, just a few steps from restaurants, shops, and boat trips. But the highlight of this apartment is definitely the sea view from the terrace.

🌊 Fun Things to Do on Lefkada

1. Hit the High Seas with a Full-Day Boat Trip!

This was the centerpiece of our one full day on Lefkada, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s the absolute best way to see a lot in a short amount of time.

Lefkada Nidri Town Greece
Boat trips departing from Nidri

Nydri is ground zero for a variety of terrific boat trips. Most trips include a stop (or at least a pass-by) at Porto Katsiki Beach, one of the most beautiful in Greece.

White cliffs drop straight down into water that cycles through different depths of blue and turquoise. It’s a dramatic setting and definitely a beach worth spending some quality time.

Egremni is right nearby and similarly jaw-dropping, with white sand and that same impossibly blue water. Reaching Egremni by land means descending a long set of steps down the cliffs — it’s doable but it’s a commitment.

By boat, you simply pull up and swim in.

The full-day boat tour from Nydri that Dave and I booked was supposed to cover both beaches plus a few stops at small islands along the way.

Unfortunately, due to sea conditions, our boat was unable to make it to Egremni. Luckily, we did get to see Porto Katsiki.

We booked the Ionian Riviera Cruise with Nidri Star and had a great time. Here are a few more great boat trips…

2. Visit Porto Katsiki Beach

Porto Katsiki is so good that it deserves its own entry even though I just talked about it. If you want to spend your day here without spending the entire day on a boat, you can drive to the top of the cliffs and walk down.

The road is long and winding, but it eventually deposits you at a parking lot. From there, it’s a set of steps down to the sand.

The views from the top alone — looking down at the white cliffs and turquoise waters below — are worth the drive.

Go early. Parking is 10 euros, and the beach has some additional facilities in summer near the parking lot. But it’s mostly without facilities, so bring everything you need for the day.

3. Hike to Dimosari Waterfalls

For something completely different from the beach scene, the Dimosari Waterfalls in the south of the island are worth the detour.

The trail winds through lush vegetation, olive groves, and pine trees — it’s a completely different side of Lefkada. The falls themselves empty into a series of natural pools.

Keep in mind that the falls are often barely a trickle in the dry summer months, so it’s worth checking their status with locals before you make the trip.

It’s a moderate hike about 500 meters, and the parking is free. There’s a small cafe just up the hill from the parking lot.

4. Explore Lefkada Town

Lefkada Town (also called Lefkas) is the main town in the north, and it’s worth spending a few hours wandering. The old town has a distinctive look — traditional houses with upper floors clad in colorful tin or wood siding, a quirky architectural style born out of earthquake-proofing.

The main street is lined with small shops and fish taverns, and the whole place has a relaxed, lived-in feel that the more touristy Greek islands tend to lose.

The Castle of Agia Mavra sits just outside town near the floating bridge — an impressive medieval fortress that’s easy to visit on your way in or out of the island.

5. Take a Day Trip to Meganisi

Many of the full day boat trips from Nidri include stops along the coast of Meganisi. But if you want to see more of this lovely little island, this Lefkada Boat Tour Cave Papapnikolis Meganisi Scorpio Madouri is the day trip to book.

You’ll get a look inside the massive Papanikolis Cave, some time to explore in Vathi village, and a stop at gorgeous Lakka Beach (one of my favorites).

It also includes time for a swim off the exclusive island of Skorpios (as close as you can get to actually visiting the island!).

If you don’t want to do a full day trip, it’s also easy to take the ferry from Nidri to Vathy and explore on your own.

6. Take a Sunset Boat Trip to the Small Islands

Scattered off the east coast near Nidri are several small islands — Meganisi, Skorpios, Sparti, and others — that make for a beautiful afternoon and evening boat tour.

Skorpios was famously owned by Aristotle Onassis (it’s now privately owned by a Russian billionaire, because of course it is), and sailing past it at sunset feels like an appropriately dramatic end to a day on the Ionian Sea.

This Evening Boat Cruise from Nidri to Vathy Village sets sail from Nidri on a traditional wooden boat and includes 2 hours in the charming village of Vathy, Meganisi – enough time for dinner on your own – before sailing back to Nidri.

7. Drive to the Lighthouse of Lefkada

Cape Lefkada, at the island’s southern tip, ends at a lighthouse with views that stretch across the open sea.

Cape Lefkatas Lighthouse Lefkada Greece
Cape Lefkatas Lighthouse

It’s connected to the legend of Sappho and has a kind of wild, end-of-the-world quality that makes the drive worth it even if lighthouses aren’t usually your thing.

The road narrows significantly as you approach, so this is not the place for a large rental car.

So don’t skip Lefkada when you visit the Ionian Islands!

I’m so glad we decided to add Lefkada to our itinerary.

If you’re planning a visit, July and August are the peak months for visitors. Of course, September is one of the best times to be anywhere in the Greek Islands. Crowds thin, prices drop, and the water is at its warmest from a full summer of sun.

For our visit in early June we had fantastic sunny weather. But the one significant downside, as I mentioned, was reduced ferry availability. That did cause a few logistical problems.

If you’re island-hopping around the Ionian Islands, I’d strongly recommend waiting until at least mid-June before you go.

The inter-island connections become much more reliable, and you won’t spend your trip making two-hour detours through the mainland just to catch a ferry (yes, we did that, I’ll explain why in the next post!).

After all of our trips to the Greek Islands, I’ve never had so many issues with ferry availability in June. It definitely makes traveling around the Ionian islands in May or early June a challenge.

But ferry issues aside, Lefkada is definitely an island I’d go back to with more time. One full day was enough to fall for it, but not nearly enough to experience it properly.

Next stop, Paxos!
