In the sunny summer months, the brilliant beaches of Greece are the perfect place to be.
With over 200 inhabited islands scattered across the Aegean and Ionian Seas, Greece truly is a beach lover’s dream.
But with so many options, it can be overwhelming to figure out which island is right for your sun-soaked getaway. Do you want long stretches of pink sand? Secluded coves perfect for swimming? Or a lively beach scene with great restaurants and bars just steps from the shore?

After visiting dozens of Greek islands over the past 20 years, I can confidently say that some islands are a better choice for beaches than others.
For example, infamous Santorini and cosmopolitan Hydra are two of Greece’s most popular islands. But no one goes to either for beaches.

And while nearly every Greek island has a lovely beach or two, there are a few that really shine in this department. And today, I’m going to dive into them one-by-one.

1. Crete
It’s no surprise that the largest of the Greek islands is also home to plenty of great beaches.
Crete is a perfect mix of ancient history, charming villages, and jaw-dropping landscapes. It’s located at the southernmost edge of Greece so you’ll find sunshine and moderate temperatures for most of the year. That extends Crete’s beach season beyond the islands of the Cyclades (for example) which close for the season by mid-November.
Beyond its quaint fishing villages and historical sites – like the Minoan palace of Knossos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Crete’s beaches are what really draws visitors from around the globe.
Elafonissi Beach is Crete’s crown jewel, famous for its shimmering pink sands and shallow turquoise waters that stretch endlessly into the horizon.
Nearby, the blue lagoon of Balos Beach rivals the Caribbean with its crystal-clear waters and dramatic mountain backdrop. If you’re feeling adventurous, venture to Preveli Beach, where a freshwater river meets the sea, creating a lush oasis surrounded by palm trees.
Tip: If you want to visit more than one island, it’s also possible to take a day trip from Crete to Santorini.

2. Naxos
While Crete is the largest island in Greece, Naxos is the largest island in the popular Cyclades group.
Naxos is a blend of traditional Greek charm and natural unspoiled natural beauty and I consider it one of the most well-rounded Greek islands to visit. From seaside whitewashed villages and beautiful mountain villages to fascinating archaeological sites and a strikingly beautiful coastline, Naxos really has it all.
The island’s southwest coast, in particular, is dotted with a string of pristine beaches.

The most popular spot on Naxos is Plaka Beach, a long, golden beach with powdery sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s got everything you need for a perfect beach day with sunbeds, tavernas, and even windsurfing options, yet it still maintains a relaxed vibe.
For something quieter, head to Alyko Beach, a quiet cove surrounded by cedar trees and protected sand dunes. Whether you’re lounging on a beach chair or strolling along its rugged coastline, Naxos is one of the best places in Greece to unwind by the sea.

3. Milos
Milos, a volcanic island in the Cyclades, is a showstopper when it comes to dramatic, otherworldly scenery.
Known as the “Island of Colors” for its brightly-colored syrmata (tranditional boat houses), Milos boasts a selection of beaches unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere in Greece. It’s a quieter, lesser-known alternative to islands like Mykonos and Naxos, but it still delivers unforgettable beauty at every turn.
The star of Milos is Sarakiniko Beach, a lunar-like landscape of white volcanic rock formations carved by the sea and wind. It’s as surreal as it is stunning, with smooth surfaces perfect for lounging and jumping into the brilliant blue waters below.
Don’t miss a day trip to the spectacular Kleftiko Bay which is only accessible by boat trip. It’s one of the best things to do on the island.

For a more traditional beach day, head to Tsigrado, a secluded sandy cove accessible by a (slightly sketchy) wooden ladder, or Papafragas Beach, a narrow inlet surrounded by towering cliffs.
Each of Milos’ beaches looks like something from a postcard and I’m constantly amazed that the island doesn’t draw more visitors. Tip: Get there before that changes.

4. Koufonisia
Koufonisia is the definition of a hidden gem. I first learned about this tiny island in the Lesser Cyclades from a driver in Santorini who confided in me that charming Koufonisia is “where Greeks vacation.”
Well, that was good enough for me and when my husband and I visited the following summer, it was love at first sight. This small, walkable island with hardly any tourists is an unspoiled beauty with a relaxed pace of life.
With only a handful of roads and a small, welcoming community, Koufonisia is perfect for the ultimate tranquil getaway. It feels a world away from the crowds of larger islands like Santorini. Despite its small size, it’s packed with breathtaking beaches that rival any in Greece.
The beaches here are incredibly accessible, with many within walking or biking distance from the main town. Pori Beach, with its soft sand and impossibly blue waters, is the crown jewel of Koufonisia and a favorite for swimming and sunbathing.
For a more rugged vibe, head to Gala, a natural swimming hole carved into the rocky coastline.
Take a water taxi from the main port to the island’s east coast and beach hop between smaller coves and bays like Fanos or Italida, where you’ll feel like you have your own private paradise. With crystal clear shallow waters, the beaches of Koufonisia are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

5. Mykonos
Considered the best Greek island for nightlife, Mykonos is one of the most famous islands in Greece. It was the first Greek island I ever visited and, back in my single days, it was a regular summer vacation destination for my friend group. Lounging on the beach all day and then dancing til dawn. Ah…youth!
But there’s more to Mykonos than just lively beach clubs and 5-star hotels. In addition to its charming Cycladic architecture and swanky cosmopolitan vibe, Mykonos also has some pretty spectacular beaches.
The iconic Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach are the heart of Mykonos’ party scene, where beach bars and DJs keep the energy high from day to night. But my favorite Mykonos beach is family-friendly Platis Gialos, a quieter pick with soft sand and calm waters on the island’s south coast.
I also love Psarou Beach, which has a relaxed vibe and great waterfront dining. Whether you’re here to dance or unwind, Mykonos offers a beach experience for every mood.

6. Paros
Located in the heart of the Cyclades, Paros is a chic blend of traditional charm and modern appeal. Known for its picturesque villages, bustling harbor towns, and stunning coastline, it’s an island that caters to both adventure seekers and those looking for a serene escape.
Kolymbithres Beach is the island’s most famous, thanks to its unique granite rock formations that create natural swimming coves. It’s perfect for snorkeling, exploring, or simply soaking up the sun in a one-of-a-kind setting.

7. Rhodes

For a wilder vibe, head to Prasonisi Beach, where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet, creating unique wind and wave conditions that are a haven for windsurfers and kiteboarders.
