Forget Santorini: Stunning Syros is the True Cyclades Gem in the Greek Islands

As the capital of Greece’s popular Cyclades Islands, Syros is a neoclassical beauty with quiet beaches and cozy cafes. It’s all charm with no crowds.
Syros might not be the first island that comes to mind when planning a trip to the Greek islands, but that’s exactly what makes it so special.
As the capital of the Cyclades, this island in the center of the Aegean Sea is a charming blend of rich history, stunning architecture, and authentic Greek culture. And it all comes without the overwhelming crowds of more popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini.
When my husband and I visited the Greek Islands last summer, Syros was a surprising highlight of our six-island trip.
Its main town, Ermoupoli, is a feast for the senses, with grand neoclassical buildings, pastel-colored mansions, and a lively harbor filled with cafes and tavernas.
The colorful Venetian architecture reminded me a lot of one of my other favorite Greek islands with a similar vibe, Symi. It’s a big departure from the traditional whitewashed homes with blue shutters that define the other Cycladic islands.

Why Visit Syros?
Syros is not your typical Greek island tourist destination.
Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will undoubtedly blow on more flights (it’s a vicious cycle). All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.
You won’t find endless party scenes or hordes of cruise ship passengers here. Instead, Syros attracts a mix of Greek locals, cultural travelers, and those “in the know” looking for a more authentic experience.
It’s the perfect place to slow down, connect with the Greek traditions, and enjoy a quieter, more laid-back Greek island vibe.
From exploring medieval villages like Ano Syros to relaxing on beautiful beaches, Syros is the perfect escape from the tourist frenzy found elsewhere in the Cyclades.
Planning a trip to Greece in 2025?
From the most spectacular beaches to the tastiest treats to try, here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip to the Greek Islands!
How to Get to Syros
Syros is located in the heart of the Cyclades island group, so it’s easily accessible from mainland Greece and neighboring islands. Its central location means that while it isn’t a major tourist hub, it’s well-connected by both ferry and air travel.
By Ferry
The most common way to reach Syros is by ferry. Ferries depart regularly from Piraeus (Athens’ main port), with travel times ranging from 2 to 4 hours depending on the type of ferry you choose.
High-speed ferries like Seajets are faster but pricier. While conventional ferries like the Blue Star ferries offer a more leisurely (and scenic) experience.
I’m a sucker for the big, roomy Blue Star ferries. But for this trip, we went with the Seajets ferry since the schedule was more convenient from our previous stop on Koufonisia.

Syros is also connected by ferry to other Cycladic islands like Mykonos, Paros, and Tinos, so you can easily add it to your island-hopping itinerary.

By Flight
Syros does have a small airport (Syros Island National Airport, Demetrius Vikelas), which offers direct flights from Athens. The flight is short—around 35 minutes—and can be a good option if you’re pressed for time.
While flights are quicker, taking a ferry is a scenic and quintessential Greek travel experience. Sit back and enjoy the ride as you take in stunning views of the Aegean Sea along the way.
Where to Stay on Syros
There’s no shortage of terrific accommodation options on Syros and, even better, it was one of the more affordable islands we visited on our trip. From charming boutique hotels to historic mansions converted into guesthouses, there are plenty of hotels to choose from.
Here are three of my favorites:
Hotel Aktaion Syros
Located right on the waterfront in Ermoupoli, Hotel Aktaion is housed in a beautifully restored neoclassical building that dates back to the 1800s. This boutique hotel features elegantly decorated rooms with high ceilings, vintage details, and balconies offering views of the harbor.
Staying here puts you right in the heart of Ermoupoli, with easy access to cafes, restaurants, and the town’s main attractions.
Hotel Hermes
Perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the Aegean, Hotel Hermes offers stunning panoramic views and a more tranquil atmosphere. It’s a short walk from the center of Ermoupoli but feels like a peaceful retreat.
The hotel has spacious rooms, many with private balconies overlooking the sea, and an outdoor terrace where you can enjoy breakfast or sunset drinks.
DIIO Suites
This small, boutique hotel is where we stayed on our visit. We booked the “Superior Suite with Sea View” and it was lovely. Overlooking the water and the restaurants and cafes of Ermoupoli, the room had modern, comfortable decor and was right in the heart of the action.
Top Things to See and Do on Syros
Syros is a wonderful blend of history, culture, and relaxation. Whether you want to wander through charming villages or relax on a quiet beach, you’ll find plenty of things to do.
Here are a few must-see attractions and activities:
1. Explore Ermoupoli
The island’s capital, Ermoupoli, is a cultural and architectural gem. Start in Miaouli Square, the heart of the town, surrounded by neoclassical buildings like the impressive Town Hall.
Visit the Apollo Theater, a miniature version of Milan’s La Scala, and stroll the marble-paved narrow streets lined with cafes, boutiques, and old mansions.

2. Wander through Ano Syros
Perched on a hill above Ermoupoli, Ano Syros is a medieval settlement full of narrow, winding alleys and traditional Cycladic architecture.
As you explore, you’ll find small churches, artisan workshops, and tavernas serving local specialties. Head to the top of the village to visit the Church of Saint George and take in sweeping views of the island.
3. Relax on Syros’ Beaches
Syros isn’t known for beaches as much as many of its Cycladic neighbors, but it does have a few good ones (primarily on the western side of the island). They range from secluded coves to more developed beaches. Some of the best include:
- Galissas Beach: A family-friendly beach with calm waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
- Kini Beach: Known for its laid-back vibe and waterfront tavernas where you can enjoy fresh seafood.
- Agathopes Beach: A pristine stretch of sand with shallow, clear waters, perfect for a leisurely swim.
In addition to sandy beaches, Syros has a number of scenic swimming spots in the heart of town if you need an afternoon dip in the turquoise sea.
Like the beautiful island of Hydra, these lovely spots mostly consist of a concrete platform with steps or a ladder to enter the sea.

4. Visit the Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli
For a deeper look into Syros’ history, visit the Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli. The museum showcases the island’s prosperous industrial past through exhibits of machinery, photographs, and artifacts. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how Syros became a thriving commercial hub in the 19th century.

5. Enjoy the Culinary Scene on Syros
Syros has a rich culinary tradition influenced by both Greek and Venetian cultures. Try loukoumia, the island’s famous sweet similar to Turkish delight, and halvadopita, a nougat-filled pastry.
Pair your meal with a local wine, and be sure to visit a taverna for classic Greek dishes like grilled octopus, moussaka, and Syros’ specialty cheeses.
This 4-Hour Traditional Greek Cuisine Cooking Class is another great way to experience the local culinary specialties on Syros.
Our favorite restaurant find on Syros was 40 Tales Fox, right in front of our hotel. With a lovely sea view and exceptional service, we had two incredible meals there during our stay.
6. Take a Day Trip to Tinos
Just a 15-minute high-speed ferry ride from Syros, the island of Tinos is a pilgrimage destination for thousands of Orthodox Christians who come to visit the Church of Panagia Evangelistria each year.
Built in 1823, this stunning marble cathedral is said to house a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to have healing powers.
Even if you’re not religious, the cultural and architectural significance of the site makes it worth a visit. Be sure to explore the small museum on the grounds, which showcases religious artifacts and pieces of Greek history.
So add Syros to your Greek Islands itinerary!
