Forget Lake Como: Limone sul Garda is Everything an Italian Lake Town Should Be 🍋

|
Best Lake Towns Italy Limone Sul Garda

Framed by towering cliffs, ancient olive groves, and the shimmering waters of Lake Garda, the charming village of Limone sul Garda is a true gem in Italy’s lakes region.

Part of the province of Brescia, this lovely town on the western shore of Lake Garda is a dream where the air is scented with citrus and narrow streets are lined with colorful buildings, quaint shops, and inviting cafes.

Despite its name, the Italian word for “lemon,” the town is not named after the fruit but possibly after an ancient Latin term, limen, meaning “boundary,” as it was once a border town.

However, lemons and citrus fruit thrive here thanks to the mild climate, and the town is famous for its historic old lemon houses, known as limonaie. Limone sul Garda has a long history of lemon cultivation, dating back to the 13th century.

Until the 1930’s, Limone was relatively isolated. But with the construction of the Gardesana road along the shores of Lake Garda in the 1930s, tourism began to flow into the region.

When my husband and I visited last summer, we quickly found that we preferred Limone sul Garda (and Lake Garda, in general) over previous visits to Italy’s most famous lake, ritzy Lake Como. It’s less expensive, less pretentious, and less touristy. Yet we found it to be equally gorgeous.

Health and Longevity

Limone gained international attention in the 1970s when researchers discovered that many residents have a rare protein in their blood, known as ApoA-1 Milano, which helps reduce heart disease risk and promotes longevity.

Since then, the town has often been associated with health and wellness.

Now let’s talk about how to get there, where to stay, and of course, where to eat!

But first…

Ultimate Guide to Italy

Planning a trip to Italy in 2025?

From jaw-dropping destinations to how to find the best gelato, here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip to Italy.

How to Get to Limone sul Garda

Getting to Limone sul Garda requires a bit of planning, as the town doesn’t have its own train station or airport. However, it is well-connected by road and ferry, and several nearby towns and airports make it relatively accessible.

Here’s what you need to know:

By Plane

The nearest airports are Verona, Milan, and Bergamo. From these airports, you can rent a car or use a combination of train and bus to reach Limone sul Garda. Here are the closest airports:

Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN) – Located about 94 km (58 miles) away, the travel time is approximately 1.5 hours by car. Verona is the closest major airport and a popular entry point for visitors heading to Lake Garda. From Verona, you can rent a car or take a combination of train and bus services to Limone.

Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) – Located about 130 km (81 miles) away, the travel time is approximately 2 hours by car. Bergamo is another good option, especially for travelers on budget airlines. The airport connects to Brescia or Desenzano del Garda, where you can continue by car, bus, or ferry.

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) – Located about 190 km (118 miles) away, the travel time from Milan’s biggest airport is 2.5 to 3 hours by car. While farther away, Malpensa offers extensive international connections, so it’s still a viable choice.

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) – Venice is farther, about 220 km (137 miles) and 3 hours by car. But if you’re already visiting Venice, it’s not hard to get to Lake Garda from there!

By Train

The nearest train stations are Verona Porta Nuova and Brescia. From there, you can take a bus or taxi to Limone sul Garda.

By Bus

If you’re in Venice or Milan, you can take a direct bus to Limone sul Garda.

  • From Venice: Try FlixBus or Itabus carriers. They’ll cost you around 10€ for an 85-mile journey.
  • From Milan: I recommend MarinoBus for this one. You’ll pay about 10€ for the 115-mile journey.

By Boat

Ferry services link Limone with other Lake Garda towns, providing scenic and convenient access.

Best hotels in Limone sul Garda

Limone has some lovely hotels and many are very affordable (another win over pricey Lake Como!). Parking can be limited in town, especially in high season. So if you’re driving, be sure to confirm that the hotel has parking available (whichever one you choose).

Here are my top picks for Limone sul Garda hotels:

Hotel Castell – This is where we stayed and the views were no less than spectacular. There’s a great pool overlooking the lake, the rates are very affordable, and they have plenty of parking.

The Hotel Castell

Park Imperial Hotel – For 5-star luxury in Limone sul Garda, this is the spot. A serene 5-star hotel offering luxurious amenities like a wellness center, outdoor pool, and fine dining. The rooms are modern with private balconies, many overlooking the lake.

Hotel Splendid Palace – When it comes to resort hotels, this is your best bet in Limone sul Garda. With both an indoor and outdoor pool overlooking the lake, plus all the amenities you need.

Hotel Villa Dirce – For a romantic getaway, this boutique hotel is a great choice. Tucked into the cliffs overlooking Lake Garda, it also has a full-service spa.

Hotel La Fiorita – Limone: A charming property with a lovely garden, pool, and views of the surrounding mountains and lake. It’s a short walk from the town center. It’s a great balance of comfort and affordability in a picturesque setting.

Hotel Cristina: Laid-back hotel featuring basic rooms, some with lake views, plus free breakfast & 2 pools.

Best Things to do in Limone sul Garda

You don’t really have to “DO” anything on Lake Garda. In fact, I love just strolling the narrow cobblestone streets of the center of the village discovering tiny shops, and stopping at lakefront cafes for an espresso.

But if you’re interested in the town’s history, here are my favorite spots to visit:

1. Limonaia Del Castel

Breathe the history of Limone by visiting the Limonaia Del Castèl’s (El Castel Lemon House)  1,633 square meter garden. This beautiful lemon house is a great spot for photography or just relaxing in the green space to enjoy the views.

The Limonaia Del Castèl was built in the 18th century and restored in 1995 after it was purchased by the Municipality of Limone. Despite being named the Lemon House, it actually has various citruses, not just lemon. And yes, you can sample citruses or purchase some citrus juices from the different stands lying around.

You can easily access the Castèl from behind Orti and Castello streets. If you want a time out on your trip to breathe and relax, I highly recommend the Limonaia Del Castèl.

2. The Lakefront of Limone sul Garda

The lakefront of Limone sul Garda is one of the most picturesque and charming areas of this beautiful Italian town. Located on the northwestern shore of Lake Garda, the lakefront offers stunning views of the clear waters of the lake, surrounded by rugged mountains.

You’ll find a delightful promenade that runs alongside the water, lined with beautiful palm trees and colorful flowers. The lakefront is also a hub for water sports such as sailing, kayaking, and windsurfing, which are popular due to the favorable winds in this region.

The San Benedetto Church (our next stop!) is also easily accessible from the lakefront.

3. San Benedetto Church

The San Benedetto Church is one of the most beautiful churches in Limone sul Garda and easily one of the most beautiful on Lake Garda.

Once you take a step inside, you’ll have a moment of awe because of its internal design. The white walls with their golden accents will have you slowly look up until you see that absolute masterpiece of a ceiling.

Then your eyes will settle on the golden altar at the end of the church, with six gorgeous candleholders sitting on top. The whole scene will take you back like 200 years in time. The spiritual experience and the architecture alone make it worthy of visiting.

Tip: If you prefer a guided tour to learn more about the town’s history, this 2-Hour Guided Tour of Limone sul Garda is a good choice.

4. Explore the Weekly Market

If you’re in town on the first or third Tuesday of the month, don’t miss a visit to Limone sul Garda’s excellent weekly market. You’ll find a wide array of local products like meats, cheeses, olive oils, and yes – more lemon goodies. Plus locally made crafts and fresh produce.

Where (& what!) to Eat in Limone sul Garda

No Italian travel guide is ever complete without food suggestions, especially in Italy’s scenic lake region.

What truly sets Lake Garda restaurants apart are the local specialties. Garda is known for its excellent freshwater fish, including trout, perch, and lavarello (whitefish). So local seafood dishes are a must.

But my favorite cuisine in Limone sul Garda is anything citrus-inspired. Look especially for lemon-infused pasta dishes and desserts like limoncello tiramisu.

The Lake Garda region also produces excellent wines including Chiaretto (a rosé) and Lugana (a crisp white). And obviously, don’t miss the locally produced limoncello!

Here are some of the best places to eat in Limone sul Garda:

  • Ristorante Gemma: This informal restaurant with a terrace along Lake Garda serves seafood, pasta, and meat plates, plus wine.
  • Hostaria Al Buongusto: This restaurant is known for its delicious Italian cuisine and cozy atmosphere.
  • Osteria Da Livio: This low-key option with a terrace serves local eats such as bruschetta, pasta, and meat plates, plus wine.
  • Il Cortiletto: This restaurant offers a variety of Italian dishes, including fresh pasta, seafood, and meat dishes.
  • Al Vecchio Fontec: This restaurant is known for its traditional Italian cuisine and cozy atmosphere.

Best Souvenirs from Limone Sul Garda

If you fall in love with Limone sul Garda like we did, you’ll probably want to bring something home to remember it by. As you wander through the charming lakefront streets, you’ll have plenty to choose from in the local shops.

Like me, you’ll probably find yourself drawn to the local citrus products, a delicious testament to the town’s rich cultivation of lemons. We love all things lemon and we bought way too much from the local shops! But I couldn’t help myself.
