I’ve Flown Over 3 Million Miles. Here are My Top 3 Secrets to Staying Fit & Healthy On the Road ✈️

|
Healthy Travel Habits

As a long-time road warrior, finding ways to eat right and exercise while travelling around the world is a must. Here are the 3 things I swear by.

Staying fit and healthy while traveling isn’t always easy.

Trust me, I know.

After 10 trips around the world, logging more than 5 million frequent flier miles, staying healthy – both mentally and physically – has always been a challenge.

Between endless airport layovers, indulgent hotel room service menus, and the temptation to order just one more cocktail on the beach, it’s no wonder frequent travel often derails even the best fitness goals.

But after years of globetrotting and testing out every hack in the book, I’ve learned how to stay on track and avoid the dreaded “travel belly” while still enjoying the journey. From quick hotel workouts to smart eating strategies, these three tips are my own secret sauce to staying in shape on the road—and I’m excited to share them with you.

So, whether you’re a weekend wanderer or a full-time explorer, here’s how to stay fit, feel good, and make the most of your travels without sacrificing your health.

1. Yogaia Online Yoga Studio

Yogaia, the online Yoga studio

These online yoga classes are perfect for travelers on the go.

I love yoga but I can’t commit to a single location yoga studio. They’re expensive and I’m just on the road too much. So Yogaia is the perfect solution for me.

They have live classes where you can turn on your camera and actually interact with the instructor. (I’ll be honest, I don’t do those.)

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will undoubtedly blow on more flights (it’s a vicious cycle).  All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.

But the best part is that all the live classes are recorded so you can do them anytime (I do that). They also range from 5 minutes to an hour so even if you have just a few minutes you can get in a quick guided stretch to start your day.

I love that it’s a constant supply of new classes so I never get bored. There are yoga classes for every level and also stretching and meditation classes if you’re looking for something less athletic.

There are so many health benefits to doing yoga and there’s no better way to take the yoga studio on the road with you than an affordable Yogaia membership.

2. Calm App

A one-year subscription to Calm

This app was recommended to me during the pandemic by a friend and co-worker and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since.

We were working for 8 weeks together inside the NBA Re-Start Bubble in Orlando and it was a stressful time. We were cut off from the outside world, working through the pandemic while being tested for Covid every other day.

It really started to get to me and I wasn’t sleeping well. My friend is a long-time user of the Calm app and suggested I give it a try.

To my surprise, it really worked!

There are lots of meditation and mindfulness options but the “sleep stories” are my favorite thing. They work so well I have yet to hear the end of one.

When you’re trying to relax and fall asleep in yet another hotel room, the Calm app is a life saver.

3. Fast, Feast, Repeat by Gin Stephens

I’m not one to give health or fitness advice (because I am supremely unqualified for that). However, when I discovered this book in 2021 it truly changed my life.

First, things first. Intermittent Fasting (aka “IF”) is NOT a diet. It really is a healthy lifestyle that has so many benefits like better sleep, better gut health, blood-sugar regulation, and yes, almost certainly some weight loss.

My husband and I have both been hooked on intermittent fasting ever since we read this book.

Ok, full disclosure, he mostly just tolerates it (though he admits he feels better when he sticks to it). And he’s not one for fasting longer than 16-18 hours.

But I truly love everything about IF. It started out as a way to drop a few pounds but three years later it’s now a lifestyle and I’ve never felt better. Even my parents are now hooked and easily dropped a few pounds that they’ve now kept off for years.

Unlike my husband, I love a long fast (48 to 72 hours) as a way to “reset” after a particularly indulgent trip or when my clothes are fitting a little snug.

We’ve easily incorporated IF into our traveling lifestyle and it not only saves us money (one less meal per day!), we have more energy and just feel better. And I no longer have to factor “free breakfast” into my hotel selection criteria.

I know, I know. The whole concept sounds kind of crazy in our food-obsessed world. But when you read the book and understand the science and health benefits behind timing your meals to let your digestive system get a break now and then, it all makes so much sense.

I challenge you to read the book, give it an honest try for 28 days, and find out whether it’s right for you (28 days is long enough to know).

So find out what works best for you!

Everyone is different and what works for me might not be best for you. But whatever you do, if you travel a LOT (like me), it’s well worth finding the health and fitness habits that keep you happy and healthy on the road.

Especially if you’re planning a big trip like a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world.

Cheers to happy and healthy travels!!
