Nicknamed the Gibraltar of the North, tiny Luxembourg is often overlooked for more famous European capitals. Here’s why that’s a mistake!

Tucked between France, Germany, and Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe.

But when it comes to this European gem, size isn’t everything.

As the world’s last remaining grand duchy (a sovereign state ruled by a grand duke or duchess), it’s one of the wealthiest sovereign states on the continent.

It’s also home to several key institutions of the European Union.

At the heart of it all is lovely Luxembourg City, one of Europe’s most visually striking capitals. Built across a deep valley, the city blends medieval fortifications with sleek modern districts with typical European flair.

The Gibraltar of the North

Luxembourg City’s history stretches back more than a thousand years.

Thanks to its strategic position, it became one of Europe’s most heavily fortified cities, earning the nickname the Gibraltar of the North.

Massive stone walls, underground tunnels, and lookout points shaped daily life here from the Middle Ages through the 17th century.

Many of those structures still define the city today. Luxembourg’s historic old town and defensive walls are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Despite its long history, Luxembourg feels anything but stuck in the past. It’s a modern city with efficient (and totally free!) public transportation, a multilingual population, and plenty of traditional European charm.

It’s a terrific European destination for a day trip, a long weekend, or even just a convenient stopover between major European capitals.

So, let’s dive into everything you need to know to plan your visit to Luxembourg!

How to Get There

One of the reasons Luxembourg works so well as a day trip is its easy accessibility. It’s exceptionally well-connected to the rest of Western Europe by air, rail, and road.

From Brussels or Frankfurt, you can reach Luxembourg city by car in less than 3 hours. From Paris, it’s just under 4 hours.

On our visit, we drove from Germany and stopped for a night on our way to Brussels. Driving was easy, and parking in the city was readily available.

Flying to Luxembourg

Luxembourg also has its own airport, Luxembourg Airport (LUX). Located just a few miles from the city center, it’s compact, efficient, and has direct flights from larger European hubs.

From the airport, public buses run straight into the city center. The trip takes about 20 minutes and costs nothing, as all public transportation in Luxembourg is free.

Arriving by Train

Traveling by train is one of the best ways to reach Luxembourg, especially if you’re already exploring nearby European cities.

Luxembourg City’s main train stations connect directly with Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, and several major German cities. High-speed and regional trains make the journey smooth and scenic, and arrival drops you right into the heart of the city.

Getting Around

Once you’re in Luxembourg, getting around is a breeze. The city’s trams and buses connect the city center, the lower part of the city, and the modern Kirchberg Plateau seamlessly.

If you’re planning to explore the rest of the country, including the Moselle River Valley, the Eislek region, or trails like the Mullerthal Trail, trains and buses make it easy to branch out for a full day of sightseeing beyond the capital.

Fun Things to Do in Luxembourg

Now, let’s get to the fun stuff!

For such a small country, Luxembourg has a solid number of impressive sights.

The best things to see in Luxembourg are concentrated around the old town and deep river valleys, so it’s easy to see the highlights in a single day.

1. Walk the Old Town

Start your exploration in Luxembourg’s old town. Also known as Ville Haute, this UNESCO-listed area is compact and filled with some of the city’s oldest buildings.

Cobblestone streets connect lively squares like Place d’Armes and Place Guillaume II, both anchored by cafés, the town hall, and historic façades.

Wander without a plan, and you’ll naturally pass many of Luxembourg’s main sights within a short walk.

Don’t miss a stroll across the historic bridges like La Passerelle and the Adolphe Bridge, which connects the old town to newer parts of the city.

These dramatic bridges deliver some of the best views over the valley. From here, you can see the city’s layered geography and appreciate just how dramatic its setting really is.

2. Stroll the Chemin de la Corniche

The Chemin de la Corniche is often called Europe’s most beautiful balcony, and it’s easy to see why. This elevated promenade runs along the edge of the old town, offering panoramic views over the Alzette Valley and the lower part of the city below.

It’s one of the city’s top highlights and a perfect place for photos, especially on a clear day.

3. Explore the Bock Casemates

Carved deep into the Bock Promontory, the Bock Casemates are one of the city’s most fascinating historical sites. These underground tunnels date back to the 17th century and once formed part of Europe’s most formidable fortress systems.

At various points in history, the tunnels served as military defenses and even as a bomb shelter. Walking through them gives real insight into why Luxembourg was once considered one of the most strategically important cities in Europe.

4. Visit the Grand Ducal Palace

The Grand Ducal Palace is the official residence of the Grand Duke and a prominent landmark in the city center. The elegant façade dominates the surrounding streets and highlights Luxembourg’s status as a grand duchy.

During the summer months, parts of the palace are open to visitors via guided tours, which offer a rare look inside one of Europe’s few remaining royal residences.

For opening dates and ticket prices, visit the Grand Ducal Palace website.

5. See the Notre Dame Cathedral

Located just steps from the palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral blends Gothic and Renaissance elements and plays a central role in the city’s religious history. It’s free to enter and worth a short stop to admire the stained glass and vaulted ceilings.

6. Wander the Grund Area

Head down into the Grund area, the city’s riverside neighborhood tucked into the valley below. Colorful houses, narrow streets, and peaceful walking paths make it feel worlds away from the city center above.

It’s one of the most photogenic parts of Luxembourg and a great place to slow down.

7. Eat & Drink Like a Local

Luxembourg’s food scene reflects its mix of cultures. Look for traditional dishes like Judd mat Gaardebounen or try local white wines from the Moselle River region.

If you’re visiting on a Wednesday or a Saturday, don’t miss the twice-weekly market held in the heart of the city on Place Guillaume II from 7:30am – 2:00pm. It’s the perfect chance to sample local specialties.

Bonus: Go Beyond the City

If you have more time, Luxembourg City makes a great base for exploring the rest of the country.

Popular options include Vianden Castle, one of the most impressive castles in Europe, or hiking in the Mullerthal Trail, often called Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland for its green hills and rock formations.
