Photo of the Day – Western Wall, Jerusalem

Built in 20 BC, this exposed section of ancient wall at the foot of the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem has been a site  for Jewish pilgrimage for centuries. Also known as the Wailing Wall, the Western Wall functions as an open-air synagogue for prayer, reading and teaching. Dividing screens separate worshipers by gender with men on one end and women on the other. More than a million tiny notes are folded and pressed into the cracks of the Western Wall annually, each containing a prayer its author hopes to have answered. Time spent quietly observing this spritual ritual in the Old City is a memorable part of any visit to Israel.
