Setting Sail on a New Adventure!

The past few months have been incredibly busy with work and holiday fun; but tomorrow, it’s finally time to grab our passports and head off on a new adventure! We’re headed to the Caribbean and this time it’s more than just a relaxing holiday, it’s an education. A sailing education, that is.

Last December, my husband Dave and I took our first sailing course in San Diego. Over the course of a postcard-worthy California weekend, we fell in love with the sport. We’ve always had the desire to incorporate extended time at sea into our future travels and now the time has come to take our sailing education to the next level. And what better place for learning than the sparkling turquoise waters of the Caribbean?

Tomorrow, we depart for the island of Saint Lucia for a few days of R&R. Then, we’ll island hop over to Saint Vincent to complete three American Sailing Association (ASA) sailing courses while living aboard a catamaran. We’ll spend six nights exploring the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines while sharpening our sailing skills and hopefully obtaining our bareboat charter certification. If we can pass all three courses, it would allow us the opportunity to charter a sailboat or catamaran nearly anywhere in the world.

Can you imagine spending a few months sailing the Caribbean, the Greek Islands or the Mediterranean coast line? Small islands and ports untouched by the cruise ship crowds and beaches accessible only by sea?

We sure can! And hopefully someday soon we will.

But first, we have lots of studying to do. In fact, there is so much to learn that it often feels like learning another language. For those of you interested in learning more about sailing, check back here often as I’ll be writing about the entire experience over the next few weeks.

Dave and I hope that by this time next month we’ll be able to include sailing in the planning for this summer’s European holiday. The Greek Islands are definitely calling our names!
