One of the coolest things about visiting Cappadocia is the opportunity to stay in a cave hotel. It is believed that the use of the region’s soft volcanic rock called “tufa” to carve homes and churches dates back to 2000BC. In recent decades, enterprising hoteliers have renovated old cave dwellings into modern hotels and made cave hotels Cappadocia’s top accommodation choice. Today’s cave hotels come in every price range from budget cave hostels to 5-star properties with all of the modern amenities you’d expect from any luxury hotel. One feature the cave hotels don’t need is air-conditioning as the walls maintain a steady comfortable temperature. For my stay, I selected a cave hotel in the mid-range of the price scale, the Divan Cave House in the fairy-tale-like town of Goreme. Staying in a cave hotel in Cappadocia is definitely a travel experience not to be missed!
