Photo of the Day – The Forbidden City, Beijing

It’s been 8 years since my last visit to Beijing (on Round the World #1) and despite the new Olympic-related attractions, not much has changed. For my first day back in the city, Shannon and I took a stroll around Tiananmen Square, explored the Forbidden City and climbed up to the hilltop pagodas in Jingshan Park for this incredible view over the former home of the Ming and Qing dynasties.  For 500 years this massive 7.8 million square foot complex served as the home of emperors and their families as well as the center of the Chinese government. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and today UNESCO lists it as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. Not a bad spot to kick off our stay in Beijing!
