How to Use Points and Miles to Redeem Your RTW Dream

Consider this post a love letter to those of you who felt more than a gentle pang of recognition while watching George Clooney in the movie, “Up in the Air.” If you’re a career road warrior like me, a trip around the world is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put all those airline miles and hotel points to extraordinary use. Status is everything in the business travel world and if you spend enough time on the road to have earned elite status with airlines and hotels, your trip can be all the more luxurious. And if you have enough points and miles, it could be nearly free.

My Delta miles have funded one First Class and 9 Business Class tickets around the world – each an approximate value of $40,000 had I paid for them. If that’s not a perk of frequent business travel, I don’t know what is.

Why Every Woman Should Travel the World Solo (at Least Once) & How to Stay Safe Doing It

Why Every Woman Should Travel the World Solo (at Least Once) & How to Stay Safe Doing It

People always ask me, “What’s it like to travel the world solo?”  The short answer?  It’s awesome. Life-affirming-adventure-seeking-mind-blowingly, awesome. But when I give that answer, I often sense doubt. After all, how could I – as a woman – possibly enjoy solo travel? “Aren’t you ever scared?” they ask, “or lonely?” (Not really, and never.)

So, I thought it was time to explain what it’s really like to travel the world solo and why I think everyone (especially every woman) should try it – at least once.

So many times when I’ve talked to other women about my travels I get a response that goes something like this: “I want to travel but I’m waiting until I meet that special someone – I just couldn’t go by myself.” Yeesh. That is the single worst excuse ever not to travel. No time? No money? Those excuses I can understand (though I contend they can also be overcome). But lack of a travel partner should never hold you back. Why wait for the right man to fulfill your travel dreams?

8 Reasons to Stop Dreaming & Start Planning a Trip Around the World

Close your eyes and picture it. The Pyramids at Giza, the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, sunrise at Angkor Wat or sunset in Bora Bora. Mysterious Machu Picchu or a safari through the African bush.…all come to mind when thoughts drift to a trip around the world. It’s the ultimate vacation, travel’s crowning glory. And for most, it’s simply a dream. Leaving it all behind. Setting adrift. Seeing the world.

Or is it? If you haven’t yet started planning a trip around the world…why not? What’s holding you back? The two most common answers to this question are 1) time and 2) money. Many think of a trip around the world as a year-long adventure he or she could never afford – in either time or money. Conventional wisdom and every Round-the-World (RTW) travel website tells us that to really do it right, you have to quit your job, sell or store your possessions and hit the road for a year or more. While this is certainly one option, it’s not necessarily a practical choice for most. Especially for those with a successful career or other obligations at home. If you’ve spent your 20’s or 30’s building a career, how do you chuck it all and set sail? The professional price to pay for a year-long sabbatical could be disastrous.

Round the World Planning Links

There are a number of websites I find useful when I’m planning my round the world trips, here are a few of my favorites:

Round the World Flights

RTW tickets are complex so you’ll want to book with an expert. You basically have two options: one of the three major airline alliances (if you’re booking with miles or want to earn miles)  or a specialized RTW ticket service like AirTreks or BootsnAll. Here’s the breakdown:

Skyteam – Since I book my RTW tickets with Delta’s Skyteam, this is my go-to site for planning out flight routings.  How can you get from Chile to Cyprus on Skyteam? This site can give you all the options for Skyteam’s 19 member airlines serving 187 countries. Essential for figuring out what your preferred flights are before you make your first call to the RTW desk. (Note: Sadly, as of January 1, 2015, you can no longer use Delta miles to book a RTW ticket with Skyteam, but you can still purchase a RTW ticket and earn tons of miles!)
