Considered a surfer’s paradise, the Indian Ocean-front town of Kuta is arguably some of the best beachfront in Bali. A fixture on the Southeast Asia backpacker route, Kuta was once considered part of the backpacking “three K’s” along with Kathmandu (Nepal) and Khao San Road (Bangkok). Its reputation as a backpacker nirvana fuels an energetic nightlife scene which perserveres despite the tragic nightclub bombings of 2002 that killed 202 people. A memorial marks the site of the bombing but tourism to the area has rebounded. Today, Kuta remains a top spot to sip a Bintang on the beach, learn to surf or enjoy a Balinese spa treatment.

I'm Jenny McIver, career girl, globetrotter. On New Year's Day, 2005, a newspaper article about a man who took a trip around the world sparked a wanderlust in me that has yet to abate. I spent the following year planning my own trip-of-a-lifetime and have since made it into an annual, month-long adventure visiting and writing about more than 130 countries on all 7 continents along the way - all while maintaining a full-time career. Today, my goal is to be that spark of inspiration for others by proving that you can fulfill your wildest travel dreams without quitting your day job.
