Photo of the Day – Sydney, Australia
It’s the first major city to greet each New Year and Sydney has certainly mastered the art of the grand celebration. Festivities focus around Sydney Harbor and start in earnest at 8pm with an indigenous Smoking Ceremony where white smoke is fired from four barges to cleanse the harbor of bad spirits. At 9pm, the Family Fireworks display kicks off along with an illuminated boat parade. Once the kids are safely tucked in bed, the real countdown party begins. Each year, the multi-tiered event has a central theme around which all events are designed. The theme for this year’s fireworks display was recently revealed as “Time to Dream” and will explode from the Harbor Bridge, city buildings and seven floating barges at exactly midnight on New Year’s Eve. And if previous television ratings are any indication, more than a billion of us will be watching.
