Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Washington, D.C.

The Washington Monument

Officially founded on July 16, 1790, Washington, D.C. is unique among American cities because it was established as the nation’s capital by the U.S. Constitution. George Washington, namesake of the city and the country’s first president, chose the site along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and began the preparation for the incoming government in 1800. Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, the Washington Monument honors the country’s first president and was completed on December 6, 1884. It stands 555′ tall and on a clear day the views are in excess of 30 miles. Unfortunately, there were no views today as the monument remains closed for structural assessment since the D.C. earthquake of August 23rd. Here’s hoping it re-opens again soon, it’s a gorgeous fall week in D.C. and the view from up there must be amazing.
