Photo of the Day – Sofia, Bulgaria
Originally founded because of the quality of its mineral waters, Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe with ruins and mineral springs spread across the city center. Today, this Bulgarian beauty is a dynamic Eastern European capital distinguished by its unique architecture and striking churches. One of Sofia’s prime tourist attractions is the architecturally-overwhelming Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Saint Alexander Nevsky was a Russian prince and the cathedral honors the Russian soldiers who died during the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1877-78. It is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world and can hold up to 10,000 people. Its gold-plated dome is 148 feet high and has the Lord’s Prayer inscribed around it in thin gold letters.
