Photo of the Day – Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
It’s a city famous for its religious diversity. Where a mosque, a Catholic church, a synagogue and an Orthodox church sit within easy walking distance of each other. Perhaps no other European city straddles east and west so effortlessly. The various empires that have ruled Sarajevo throughout history have each left an indelible mark. Spanning the Miljacka River is the historic Latin Bridge. In 1914, Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated near the bridge triggering the start of World War I. After a turbulent history, today’s Sarajevo has emerged as an up and coming tourist destination. In fact, in 2009, Lonely Planet named it one of the Top 10 cities to visit in 2010.
