Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Palo Alto, California

Stanford University

While in Palo Alto this weekend as my ESPN crew covered the Cal/Stanford football game, I realized that the campus of this prominent university is a tourist attraction all its own. Founded in 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior University, the Spanish-colonial designed campus is situated just 37 miles southeast of San Francisco and considered one of the most prestigious and selective universities in the world. At the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford faculty and alumni have founded many prominent technology companies like Google, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and Yahoo!. But the university isĀ famous for more than its brain power; in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Stanford athletes won eight Gold medals, moreĀ than any other university in the United States. And their football team, led by Heisman front-runner Andrew Luck, is currently in the thick of the national championship race.
