Photo of the Day – Taipei, Taiwan
Located in the heart of Taipei City, the vast Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Square is home to the National Theater, the National Concert Hall and a park surrounding the Memorial Hall that gives the complex its name. Erected in memory of the former President of the Republic of China, the elements of traditional Chinese architecture are evident in the memorial’s design by architect Yang Cho-cheng. The memorial hall is covered with the colors of the Taiwanese flag: blue, white and red. The colors symbolize independence, equality and universal love. Groundbreaking took place in 1976 and the hall opened to the public in 1980 on the 5th anniversary of the leader’s death. In 2007, it was noted as a national historical site and the square was re-named Liberty Square. Today, the complex remains the most famous monument and tourist attraction in Taiwan.
