Just off Malaysia’s west coast, the 99 islands of the Langkawi archipelago beckon from the middle of the turquoise Andaman Sea. Coined from the Malay words lang (a brown eagle) and kawi (a local manganese stone), they reign as Malaysia’s most popular holiday destination. Also known as the “Jewel of Kedah,” the islands lure visitors with swaying palm trees on white-sand beaches and exceptional diving. But perhaps Langkawi’s best attraction is its wildlife. The islands are home to two species of primate - the long-tailed Macaque and the Dusky Leaf Monkey. They can be found in abundance not just in the forest canopy but also exploring the grounds of Langkawi’s luxury resorts. Regular monkey sightings were definitely a highlight of my Langkawi visit.
