Photo of the Day – Cuzco, Peru
Best known as the gateway to Machu Picchu, the historic town of Cuzco is the continent’s oldest continuously-inhabited city. With an elevation of more than 11,000ft, Cuzco seems to exist in the clouds of the Peruvian Andes. Once the center of the Inca empire, today’s colonial city of Cuzco is an archaeological treasure with a coveted spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From the Spanish charm of the lively Plaza de Armas to photo ops with alpaca-towing locals, Cuzco is the perfect place to acclimate to the high life. After your visit to Cuzco, Machu Picchu awaits via 4-day trek along the Inca Trail or 4-hr scenic train ride with PeruRail (time was short for me so I chose the train).
