Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Angkor, Cambodia

Touring the temples the easy way

From the 9th to the 15th centuries, the Khmer Empire flourished in southeast Asia.  Cambodia’s Angkor region served as the seat of this powerful empire.  Today the 400-square mile area just outside Siem Reap is known as Angkor Archaeological Park and is home to more than 1,000 temples ranging from piles of ancient rubble to the magnificent Angkor Wat.  The temples of Angkor Thom and Bayon also impress millions of visitors annually and you could easily spend weeks exploring what is arguably one of the world’s most important archaeological sights. But if there’s one thing not to be missed, it’s an early morning trek in the darkness to witness the sunrise over Angkor Wat.  It’s one of the most spectacular experiences in the world.
