Photo of the Day – Butrint, Albania
Now that I’ve had a chance to re-adjust to life back at home for a few days, I thought I’d use this week to highlight my Top 5 favorite places from the Europe & Balkans trip. It was a great month and it’s so hard to narrow it down, but coming in at #5, my day-trip to Albania. After docking in Saranda in an area called the “Albanian Riviera,” I headed out to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed archaeological site of Butrint. Considered a microcosm of Mediterranean history, Butrint covers the rise and fall of great empires from 4th century BC to the Ottoman defenses created in the early 19th century. According to classical mythology, Butrint was founded by exiles fleeing the fall of Troy. Virgil’s epic poem, the Aeneid, recounts Aeneas visiting Butrint on his way to Italy. This photo (taken from the fortress at the top of the hill), was one of my favorites of the day.
