Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Portofino, Italy

Portofino, Italy

What a day!  We docked in Genoa, Italy this morning at 9am and planned to use our time ashore to take a ferry over to Portofino for the day.  As a bonus, our ferry made a one hour stop at a beautiful little beach called S. Fruttuoso.  We’d never even heard of it but it turned out to be one of the most picturesque spots on the East Riviera (I tweeted a picture earlier – it almost made photo of the day!).

We probably would have stayed if not for our great desire to see Portofino.  So, we hopped back on the ferry and headed out along the scenic Liguria coast.  As you cruise into Portofino, the colorful buildings and luxurious yachts dotting the bay make you think you’ve stepped into a movie set.  It almost doesn’t seem real.  Perhaps Italy brought to you by Walt Disney or something.  But definitely not real.

We spent the afternoon checking out the pricey shops, sipping wine with lunch and generally walking around in disbelief of our surroundings.  Portofino is one of those rare places that lives up to the hype.  Tomorrow, we’ll be checking out another Italian hot-spot with a lot of hype - Capri.  Here’s hoping it also lives up to its sterling reputation.  Ciao!
