Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Corfu, Greece

The view of Corfu Town from the Ionian Sea

Long controlled throughout history by Venice, the architecture of Corfu’s main town has a profound Venetian influence.  In fact, walking through the labyrinth of winding, cobbled alleyways you’d almost believe you were in Venice rather than Greece.  Absent are the white-washed buildings clad with bright blue shutters, instead replaced by the warm pink and yellow hues that define the Venetian blend of Gothic and Moorish architecture.  Corfu’s history is laden with battles and the legacy of these struggles remains in the two castles that surround the capital.  It is the only city in Greece to be fortified in this way.  I spent a nice Sunday morning wandering the streets of Corfu Town before heading to the airport for my flight to Bucharest.  Next stop, Romania!
