Photo of the Day – Jackson Square, New Orleans

St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square

Modeled after the famed Parisian square Place des Vosges, Jackson Square was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.  Originally known as Place d’Armas, it was the cultural and business center of early New Orleans.  In 1814, after the Battle of New Orleans, it was renamed Jackson Square in honor of General Andrew Jackson and his equestrian statue still stands in its center.  Dominating the skyline on one end of the square is St. Louis Cathedral, seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans and the oldest continuously-operating cathedral in the United States.  Opposite the cathedral, you’ll find another local favorite, Cafe du Monde.  Stop in for a cafe au lait and an order of beignets piled high with powdered sugar.  Rich with history, today’s Jackson Square serves as a lively gathering place for artists, musicians, street performers and fortune tellers alike.
