Photo of the Day – French Quarter, New Orleans

Walking handgrenades on Bourbon Street

Also known as Vieux Carré – or simply the “Quarter” to locals – the French Quarter sits on some of the highest ground in New Orleans along the Mississippi River.  Since the early 1800′s the neighborhood has served as the cultural hub of the city and today it is known for some of the best music and cuisine in the world.  Spanning the length of the French Quarter is legendary Bourbon Street.  Though largely quiet during the day, Bourbon Street comes alive at night.  During Mardi Gras, hundreds of thousands of bead-wearing tourists pack the street drinking handgrenades and hurricanes to usher in the Lenten season.
