Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Cape Town, South Africa

Boulders Beach, South Africa

From just two breeding pairs in 1982, the colony of African Penguins on Boulders Beach has grown to almost 3,000 today.  It’s the only place in the world where you can still swim with penguins.  There are actually two sides to the beach - separated by large boulders – one for humans and one for penguins.  While the humans are obligated to stick to their side, the penguins operate under no such sense of duty and freely swim between the two.  The Cape Peninsula National Park Service kindly asks that humans keep a 2ft distance from any penguin they encounter in the ocean or on the beach.  Easier said than done!  A visit to Boulders Beach is definitely a unique experience - just don’t forget to check for inquisitive penguins under your car before you leave the parking lot!
