Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Photo of the Day – Brisbane, Australia

The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Brisbane

Built in 1927, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the world’s first and largest koala sanctuary.  Home to more than 130 koalas and over 90 species of native Australian animals, Lone Pine was severely affected during the January 2011 Queensland floods.  Thanks to the dedication of the staff – many of whom camped out at the sanctuary during the flood - all of the animals were safely evacuated.  However, clean-up from the disaster continues.  From Brisbane central, the Miramar boat cruise makes the 1 hour and 20 minute trip each day at 10am.  It’s a scenic ride through Brisbane’s suburbs and a stress-free way to arrive and depart.  Donate to a good cause by cuddling with a koala for a photo (for a very reasonable fee) or, if you can’t make it in person, help a koala out and contribute to the rebuilding of Lone Pine by clicking here.
