Seeing the World – One Month at a Time

Sailing across international waters in the Caribbean

To be honest, I’ve never really thought cruising was for me.  It just didn’t seem like it fit with my “style” of independent travel.  But I have to say it’s growing on me a little.  I’ve discovered that my favorite part about cruising is meeting the internationally-diverse crew.  Over the past two days, I’ve met crew members from the Philippines, Malaysia, Serbia, India, Bali, Croatia and many more.  The one thing they all have in common is they love to talk about their home countries – and if you happen to have visited their country, you’ve made an instant friend on board.  Since I’ve been to a lot of countries, I’m making a lot of friends!  Last night in the dining room, I noticed a name tag on our cocktail waitress indicating she was from Serbia.  When I asked her about Serbia (I am going there in July) she brightened immediately and rattled off recommendations for my visit.  Before we left dinner she came back by our table with her contact info and an open invitation to stay at her family’s house while I’m in town.  I’ve met a lot of crew from the Balkans and Eastern Europe which is really helping me with my planning for my summer trip.  It just goes to show, you never know where your best travel tips will come from.  A cruise ship, who would’ve thought?
